What it costs, in one line

You set the price and the floor is $5 a month. There is no ceiling — if your people will pay more than that, it is information about your audience rather than a problem for us to solve. The card fee is Stripe's, it is flat, and the desk shows you the whole split as you type the number rather than after you have saved it.

You are the merchant of record

This matters more than it sounds. The charge is yours, the money is yours, Stripe pays you directly and issues your tax form. Your name is what appears on a subscriber's card statement. We are not holding your earnings and releasing them monthly, because we never have them.

What you have to do before it goes public

• Sign the Creator Agreement. You keep your copyright. You can download a copy before you sign it and at any point afterwards.
• Say where your music comes from. One question, and it is the one that ends podcasts — the answer is written down with the date, which is what turns a takedown notice into a five-minute conversation instead of an investigation.
• Publish at least one whole episode free. Not a trailer. Nobody subscribes to something they have never heard, and no podcast directory will carry a feed with nothing in it.
• Set up payouts. A few minutes and a bank account.

The desk refuses by name rather than greying a button, so you always know which one is holding you.

Recording, without leaving the page

Press record at the desk and talk. It becomes an mp3 while you speak rather than after you finish, so a forty-minute episode is ready the moment you stop. Bring your own file instead if you would rather — both paths go to the same place.

And a room to talk in

Recorded episodes go one direction. A live room goes both: open one and anybody subscribed to you can listen. They raise a hand, you see the hands, and you decide who comes on — you can mute somebody or take them off the mic, and taking them off ends their turn without throwing them out of the room. Audio only, and we do not record it.

Who this is for

Working comics with an audience that already turns up. If you are starting from nobody, a paywall is not the thing that will fix that — and we would rather say so here than take 20% of nothing and let you find out slowly.
